Turkey is largely undeveloped as regards its great skiing potential. The central and eastern areas have a long and very cold winter with powder snow abounding in the mountains, western and southern areas have milder climates but on several mountain areas snow lasts till April. Ski touring is possible till early May in the Aladaglar (Toros Mountains) as well as the Baydaglar in the Antalya - Kumluca area and even on Mt Olympos. Ski resorts tend to be small with few lifts however several stand out of these we recommend Sarikamis near Kars in the far north-east. Here a fine hotel base is available and very high quality snow conditions prevail from mid-December till mid-April with a variety of pistes providing all levels of skiing including some very pleasant forest routes.
