Beycik Village

Day Walks and other Outdoor Activities

new EWP site

Beycik lies in a national park on the slopes of Mount Olympos on the Lycian Peninsula of Turkey. One of the main trekking centres in Lycia with the Lycian Way reaching the village from the beautiful beach at Cirali, via the flames of the Chimaera. It continues over a high pass, famous for its beautiful ceders, to drop down to the village of Yayla Kuzdere. From the pass one can make a side trip to the summit of Mount Olympos. Over 100km. of other, well-waymarked and sign-posted walking trails exist around Beycik offering a full week of adventurous walking year round. In summer, walks to the high yaylas and ceder forests provide a respite from the coastal heat. Marked routes to the beaches of Cirali, Maden, Beycik Buku and Tekirova Buku (swimming and camping). Another popular walk is to the ancient ruins of Laodikeia and the nearby spring.

In winter Mount Olympos summit can only be reached by a modern cable car. With touring skies you could undertake a short tour based at the summit station - or a longer descent would necessitate carrying your skies down to Beycik. In spring mountaineers can enjoy a tour round the summit ridges with crampons and ice axe. From May to November the top is accessible to walkers from the Lycian Way pass or to scramblers by the stunning East Ridge. Rock climbing on Mount Olympos itself is a serious undertaking but at Laodikeia traditional rock climbs are available, on the road up to Beycik several bolted routes are found on a roadside cliff.

Beycik is also popular with road and mountain bikers with a large number of forest and mountain trails to follow.

One of the most beautiful caves on Mount Olympos is found very near Beycik - for route finding and conservation reasons a guide should be obtained for this trip.

At any time a year a wide variety of flowers are seen in the national park, these are at their best in spring when a walk up the ancient Finike Yol is a must to the botanically minded.

Accommodation ranges from high quality lodges to basic pansiyons. The Nara Hotel and Cinaralti are popular with walkers passing through or visiting Beycik for several days. There are also several restaurants and two small shops. Sibel's 4 Season Restaurant and the Cinaralti provide a variety of traditional Turkish foods, others such as the Panorama, Riviera or Nirvana specialise more in the local fish dishes. Pandas
