eclipse totalityThere will be a total solar eclipse in August 2008. Its maximum duration will be 2 minutes 27 seconds at approximately 65 N, 72 E. This is a location in Northern Siberia where the sky is often either overcast or hazy. The optimal viewing conditions in an interesting environment for viewing will most likely be just to the south of the Altai Mountains, in the Gobi Desert in western Mongolia. If you examine the statistics produced by NASA it appears that the area just south of Hovd in Mongolia will be one of the better regions. The following programme takes in some of the more beautiful sights of the area and gets you to an, hopefully, ideal viewing location in the Gobi National Park. Accommodation will be in good quality (by local standards) hotels or camping.

Enroute we explore Gurvan Tsenkheriin Cave, home of Stone Age people living about 20-15,000 years ago that contains rock engravings and burials sites from Hun period. A visit will be made to a local Uriankhai nomadic family. Their way of life is very similar to the Mongolian nomadic peoples who speak a slightly different dialect than the nomadic peoples of the east. Foreign guests are a rare treat for them and they welcome them warmly. In the afternoon drive back to Munkhhairhan and then continue driving for a few hours to make camp.

Mountain Group
Scenic area, camping close to the base of Mount Munkhhairhan. Up early in the morning ascend towards the summit. This takes around 5 hours. Good views, it is possible to see signs of snow leopard and snow peacock. Local families nearby could be visited with a chance to see nomadic life; herding goats, making felt, see kitchen ger, try local food.
